We already have Primal Mashed Potatoes on the forum... Does anyone have any other primal dishes they are making for thanksgiving?
i.e - primal pies, primal stuffing, etc., etc.
I would love to hear how you guys are getting creative!
Ill be making both the turnip and cauliflower mashed potatoes, and thanks to 62Shelby, they will contain blue cheese!

I was just thinking about this!
ok, here is my list
pork terrine, wrapped in prosciutto with prunes and chicken livers.
chestnut and apricot stuffing (ok, the chestnuts are high carb)
chicken liver pate with cognac
the mash above, with roasted garlic
a primal pudding made with almond flour and low g.i fruits ie berries, butter and lots of eggs.
not primal but want to make a concession for my family, sweet potato tart tatin, w/ creme fraiche and pumpkin seed brittle.

I will be making low carb pies! I know that when you bake fruit, however, that it becomes more sugary, and barely nutritious... but it is thanksgiving!
Here is how I make my Almond flour pie crust:
Ingredients:
* 1 and 1/2 cups almond meal or almond flour
* Artificial sweetener equal to 3 tablespoons sugar (I am using stevia)
* 3 tablespoons melted butter
Preparation:
Heat oven to 350 F. Melt the butter (if the pie pan is microwave safe, melt the butter in it) and mix the ingredients up in the pan and pat into place with your fingertips.
I then slice apples, sprinkle some cinnamon on them, then bake it all together. Works pretty well, tastes pretty good.
I usually do not totally believe in baking with almond flour, and trying to mimmick baked goods with primal ingredients, but shoot, it is Thanksgiving!
Have a happy one.

Very very impressed... If you get a moment, could you please explain how you are making the stuffing... I might copy you! :)
thanks.

Actually, I made some almond meal stuffing today! haha. Had to get in the kitchen and make my primal goods before the kitchen gets all crazy tomorrow.
To get your mouth watering, here is a pic of the finished product:
And here is the recipe:
* 2 1/2 cups almond meal
* 2 egg whites
* 1 Tablespoon baking powder
* fresh thyme, basil, oregano, rosemary (poultry seasoning, but in fresh herb form_
* 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
* 1/2 cup (1 stick) melted butter
* 2 eggs
* 1/2 cup water
I mixed all these together, then I sauteed white onions and celery in some butter... tossed those in the mix. I then diced cranberries (for color!), and threw those in too! I then baked @ 350 for 45 minutes. I will let you know how they taste tomorrow... They look and smell great though.

pk, looks awesome!
here is one with breadcrumbs but I think you could easily sub almond flour, this one also has sausage in it! it also omits herbs, I would be inclined to use sage or oregano here?

I made it easy and just ate turkey. The looks on people's faces when we finished filling our plates was priceless...everybody has all the traditional Thanksgiving foods and there I am at the head of the table with about 3 lbs of turkey meat and skin. It's always been my favorite part of the meal anyway so I didn't miss the other stuff. Enjoy the day!

pk,
So how did the almond meal dressing taste? I'm thinking of trying something like it for Christmas, since I'm gluten intolerant and really shouldn't eat my aunt's traditional cornbread dressing (half cornbread/half white bread).

It was very nice, delicious in fact! Almond meal works well for stuffing because even though it is usually very dry (pancakes, cookies, etc.), you can drench it with turkey juice! In fact when I dug into the leftovers, I found that it was gone... and the regular stuffing was all that was left!
Celtia - did you spend TG in Dallas?

pk,
Good to know the almond meal worked. I plan to try it for Christmas.
Yes, I spent Thanksgiving in the area. We're lucky in that all the extended family is geographically close.
Hope you and the rest of the tribe also got to enjoy family without having too much travel hassle!

PK, don't mind at all. Turning 40 in April 2010. Currently doing Crossfit inspired workouts several times a week and running a few miles a couple times a week. Until a year ago I was a marathon and ultramarathon runner, no other exercise. I'm exercising about 10 hours less a week and am in much better shape...can't beat that! Grew up with football, still play competitive flag football as often as possible but the kids' activities are taking more of my time every day. Just an old guy trying to stay in shape to keep up with the kids as they get older!
Is your professional tennis still a work in progress or are you finished with that? Have you been able to tell whether this style of exercise helps or hinders your tennis play?
Much respect! Ill be there soon enough. GP - if you don't mind me asking, what is your athletic background? age? sports you play/played etc? stats, you know!

Ha! My experience was almost exactly the same. I had lots of turkey, primal deviled eggs, and a fresh salad. Passed on the stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, dessert, etc. Just like eating primal at any large meal, it stands out slightly, but its no big deal and it is worth it!
