View Full Version : What's your drinking strategy?

Alcohol, I mean. ;) I'm sure the "right" answer is different for everyone.

Personally, I used to drink gin with lime or whiskey on the rocks every night -- 2 or 3 of them! Eek! I quit that cold turkey last spring when I got serious about strength training. These days, I drink only socially (and since my SO is moving to a town 3.5 hours away and I live rather anti-socially out on my farm, that's about to become even less frequent!). My preference is straight whiskey or red wine, but I don't object to a beer or two.

Hi,

I like to keep it simple... and although I do take down the occassional red bull, I highly prefer to keep my drinks as natural as possible.

Straight Whiskey and the occasional Manhattan
Wine - prefer red
Beer - keep it lighter but not crappy tasting
Margaritas - fresh lime juice + a touch of cointreau + agave nectar as sweetener if I want some. On the rocks, no salt.

That sounds good...

I'm a red wine kind of guy. Liquor usually doesn't taste good to me (although kaluha and almond milk does) or make me feel too good.

I drink like I eat, socially from time to time. And that is it. It isn't fuel, and I treat it accordingly.

Bingo. I'm going to remember that phrase.

Lately, I have been doing vodka with seltzer and a squeeze of lime juice. I used to be a big diet coke fan, but I am trying really hard to avoid the artifical sweetners. Red wine is also on my list, especially when I feel like "fancying-up" my dinner of grilled grass-fed steak! I'm not much of a beer drinker, though I have discovered Wild Blue Blueberry lager, which is so delicious I can't even describe it! Unfortunately, the beer makes me bloat so that has become a very rare indulgance. Best thing to do, keep it simple, keep it real, and do your best to avoid the mixers filled with sugar or artificial sweetner.

A polite sip of wine or distilled spirits is rare for me now. Beer is out. Likely all alcohol will end for me soon enough.

Wine, usually red but not always. I drink straight whiskey and brandy. I have celiac, so I never drink beer, and I stay away from sweet mixers for the most part. I do have a cocktail now and then, but always made at home from fresh juices, etc.

I don't drink every day - probably once or twice a week and only a max of two drinks.

Red wine is my current preference, but I find myself drinking less and less of it as I progress in my Paleo habits. I do enjoy quaffing a couple beers with friend on social occasions but, again, less and less over time. I'm fortunate to live in San Diego County, home of some great microbrews like Karl Strauss and Stone Brewing Co., so at least there are some decent quality options when I do partake...

I'm curious, tcf. You say that you're consuming less beer in social settings -- is that because you have found a good substitute beverage for such occasions, or do you find yourself going out less often? If you've found an alternate beverage, do tell!

BarbeyGirl, can't speak for tribecalledfit, but I will now get a seltzer water or club soda, over ice, with a slice of lemon or lime in it. Looks like a drink, satisfies social mores to have a glass on hand for toasts etc at social events. But it's just carbonated water, no sweeteners, or bad stuff in it. Various sparkling waters do the trick too. And it is a tasty treat.
