View Full Version : Moving Slowly

Part of me wants to say this hardly qualifies as a challenge. It's too easy.
Like most of us here, I like my workouts fast, hard, and heavy.
But, the more I read, the more I understand the value of moving slowly.
So I'm going to do more of it.
Even though it doesn't feel useful.
Which is its own kind of challenge, after all.
I'm committing to walking at least 15 miles per week. That's 15 miles in addition to my strength and HIIT workouts and the "moving slowly" that is already part of my life (farm chores, parking several blocks from the office, etc.) 15 miles I wouldn't otherwise cover. No running is allowed. Skipping and grapevines are permissible if I'm feeling particularly energetic. Cross country skiing is a valid substitute.
I started tonight, with 3 miles along the agricultural roads under a nearly-full moon. My staghound has decided to join me. Anybody else? (I promise you don't have to wear a leash and collar.)

That sounds very niceee. Barbey, I will try to join you with this. Having a dog, which I do as well, certainly makes walking a lot easier doesn't it? CCskiing sounds like a great moving slowly option... you able to do that in Idaho right now?

There's usually not enough snow here in the Treasure Valley, but my SO is moving to a mountain town where there's plenty of snow and a million miles of scenic trails. I haven't been on CCskis in years, but I'm going to pick up a pair in the next week or two so we can go exploring.
What kind of dog do you have?

Ha! A mini schnauzer! That strike me as funny because my dogs are so big (staghound and greyhound). :) I'll see if I can figure out how to post a pic when I'm on my other computer.
Ahhh, my SO. I may be able to get him over here soon, once he's done with the craziness of moving house. He's an endurance athlete, though...shhhhhh! ;)
Barbey that does sound kind of nice, it would give me the chance to explore the area around me on foot which I really haven’t done much of here yet. Amazing what you see walking that you don’t driving! I wouldn’t be able to start this week though. We’re under construction right now so my workouts have been pounding out tile and ripping up carpet. Then I got a crazy thought and a glazed look came over me as I decided to remove a wall also. So any who, this week is kind’a full from sun up to sun down but I’m thinking I could join in by next week, I’ll plan on that!
PK, I have a miniature schnauzer too, he’s black. First small dog we’ve ever had. Last ones were siberian husky and boxer so this little guy is much different. Small but thinks he’s a big!

Barbey - endurance athlete... at least he is active. Running require willpower, which I find to be the strongest character trait that eating healthy and working out develops.

Small but thinks he’s a big! You just described my dog to a T.... put a pic up if you can, haha. I love a good miniature schnauzer... In my opinion, they are the best...:)

Have you started yet, pk?
I'm at 6 out of 15 miles for the week. Didn't have time last night, though I did spend considerable extra time on farm chores due to the freezing weather. Lots of ice to break! That doesn't count toward this challenge, of course, but it's still moving slowly! :)

Very true. I place very high value on the athletic mindset. And the good news is: He's added in a lot of strength training lately and cut down on the endurance work, which he knows isn't the best thing for health, but it's what he loves so he doesn't want to give it up entirely. Fair 'nuff.
So...update on Week 1 of the challenge. I didn't make it. Not even close.
We had some FREEZING weather come in -- way colder than I've ever experienced in this part of the country. It's below zero this morning, again. I'm not opposed to walking in very cold temps, but other problems have arisen that have cost me my walking time -- most particularly, the freezing of my supposedly frost-free spigots. The upshot is that I've been hauling livestock water by hand, in buckets, up the hill and along the path from my garage to the paddocks.
9 horses, 4 sheep, and 12 chickens drink a lot of water! Almost 100 gallons yesterday. Good workout, though. :)
As for the walking, I'll keep trying, especially after I get my spigots fixed.

Freezing weather... I think Primal people curled up and did a whole buncha noting when that happened... is that right?
I am currently in Israel - that is why I have been MIA past few days. However, I spent 3 hours walking around Tel Aviv yesterday... And will spend the day today walking around Jerusalem! Primal in holy land... haha.
Best of luck with all your work...

LOL, pk. That explains why you were posting at almost 3am, my time. Israel! Far cry from my current environment. :) Tonight, Ironman and I will be snowshoeing through the winter woods (in sub-zero temps) to a yurt for his work Christmas party. I'll be sure to think of you over there on the sultry streets of Jerusalem, falafel in hand...oh wait. That's not primal. Never mind. ;)

Phew, you don’t know how relieved I was to read that lol! You’d think I’d learn by now that remodeling takes twice as long as we ever figure it will! So between all that and some want-a-be sinus thing I had going on from the dusty mess in here, I didn’t get my miles in either. I hope to have the whole thing wrapped up this weekend and I’m feeling better so I’ll give it another try for next week!

That has got to be the coolest x-mas party I’ve ever heard of! You had fun huh?!
We didn’t make it to ours…would have been a couple hour drive in to the city with a snow storm in the works so we skipped it this time. Snowshoeing in the woods to a yurt though, now that sounds totally worth braving a snow storm for :)

LOL Yeah, it was fun! C-c-c-cold until the woodstoves got fired up, but then it was quite comfortable. Good food, good company, a good time all around. :)
