I was recently introduced to Cavemen Cookies (http://www.cavemencookies.com). Naturally, the name drew me in. From there, I decided to try the product.
I want to introduce you to them, and also see what you guys, as primal/paleo eaters, think of them.
First, and foremost, ingredients:
"Honey, almond flour, walnuts, raisins, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon."
Initially, from the average primal perspective, these ingredients are more than acceptable. I could easily see a lot of Mark Sisson devotee's being pretty excited about this product. However as you ease more towards the traditional paleo style of eating, there are some points of contention, mainly the honey and the raisins... But I know of some people who might not even be a fan of ingesting almond flour.
All in all, I find the ingredients to be quite sound. On a day to day basis, I shy away from honey... but in the right proportions (just a dab), I feel like it can be OK from time to time.
Now, ingredients are one thing, their proportions are another:
I was actually disappointed to see that honey was the most prevalent ingredient. It made me feel like these are simply wads of almond flour raisins, and spices glued together with honey (they were not that! I describe taste and texture below). Thus, I didn't really know what to expect before I opened the bag.
Here are the actual nutrition facts/cookie:
Fat - 3.5 Grams (.25 Saturated)
Carbs - 7.5 grams
Sugars - 6.5 grams
Protein - 1.5 grams
Before diving in, I knew that honey was the most prominent ingredient and carbs, the fuel source... thus, I knew these guys had to be tasty to be worthwhile (even though the ingredients were Primal friendly)
Finally, the taste:
I tasted ginger more than anything... Which was a good thing! I love ginger snaps, and the flavor of Cavemen Cookies was quite reminiscent of cookie eating days.
Even though Honey is the most prominent ingredient, the cookies were not overly sweet... Nothing like a modern day cookie.
Overall, I like the flavor a lot.
Another important cookie component, consistency:
The cookies were chewy, and I like that. But if you are looking for a crunchy cookie, this is not it.
In my opinion, the cookies were an organic, flour less, tasty, chewy gingersnap.
To buy them again, they would have to take honey out of the equation somehow... I just do not like eating it on a regular basis. I have invited the owner of Cavemen Cookies to the forum, so if you guys provide feedback too (on nutrition facts, ingredients, recipe ideas, and if you try them, taste), your suggestions will go right to the boss!
